Genesis 23:1-20
Sermon given by: Pastor Carl Broggi.
Intro: The 1st funeral service recorded. Many people are terrified of death; there are many ignorant views of how to deal with it.
I. Abraham’s tears- Genesis 23:1-2. Sarah dies and there was mourning and weeping because of missing her.
II. Abraham’s testimony- Genesis 23:3-6. Now is the time when faith should be a witness.
III. Abraham’s tact- Genesis 23:7-16. Abraham didn’t want to accept the land as a gift because he recognized:
1. Not to accept gifts from unbelievers
2. He also needed a deed so the land could pass to his heirs.
Personal Application:
1. Lesson of choosing eternal over temporal.
2. Timeless lessons while facing death—when a lost man dies he never stops weeping.
3. Jesus has removed the sting of death but you must repent and come to know Him!

Genesis 22:1-23

Intro: Abraham and Isaac achieved a spiritual test that no one had ever achieved!

Genesis 21:22-34
Sermon given by: Pastor Carl Broggi.
Intro: Some of us do great things for God, but are you enjoying God? Time with the Lord must take precedence.
I. The plea of Abimelech, see Genesis 21:22-24. Abimelech is not a believer and therefore Abraham just wished to be treated fairly.
II. The pledge of Abimelech, see Genesis 21:25-31. The seven ewe lambs are used as a receipt/insurance.
III. The parting of Abimelech, see Genesis 21:32-34. God is growing Abraham. We are called out to be different in our activities and the way we behave.
Personal Application - Consistent obedience with God:
1. Brings favor with men, see also Proverbs 16:7.
2. Brings spiritual confidence in life.
3. Brings an intimate walk with God.

Genesis 21:1-21
Sermon given by: Pastor Carl Broggi.
Intro: A study of contrast. Joy often comes through pain and heartache; see Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. Like in the family—the same people that can bring us joy can also bring us heartache.
I. The miracle of Isaac, see Genesis 21:1-7. Isaac means laughter-
1st time: Genesis 17:15-21.
2nd time: Genesis 18:9-13.
3rd time: Genesis 21:5-6. (Is anything too difficult for the Lord?)
II. The mockery of Ishmael, see Genesis 21:8-11. Ishmael was also Abraham’s joy but, Sarah lost control and anger overcame her. (This is an example of a child caught in the middle.)
III. The mercy of God, see Genesis 21:12-21. (What should Abraham do?) God tells him to listen to Sarah. Abraham and Sarah could only give glory to God for Isaac since he was a miracle baby. Hagar is sent away-God hears the distress of loved ones; God provided for them, see also Psalm 68:5-6.
Personal Application:
1. Though God can forgive sin it doesn’t mean we won’t face the consequences.
2. God is still bigger than any sin, see Romans 5:20.

Genesis 20:1-18
Sermon given by: Pastor Carl Broggi.
Intro: Abraham is called ‘a friend of God.’
I. Abraham’s misstep, see Genesis 20:1-2. This is his besetting sin see in Genesis 12:11-13. It is a half truth and Abraham’s motivation is to deceive because he is fearful for his life.
II. Abraham’s misery, see Genesis 20:3-16. God knew precisely what was in the king’s heart. The men were frightened also because of God’s warning. Abraham forgot God’s promise and therefore he is stepping out of the Will of God. Sin can be passed generationally, see Genesis 26:6-10.
III. Abraham’s mercy, see Genesis 20:17-18. Abraham doesn’t become bitter; he realized the king as God’s tool to show God’s mercy. Psalm 66:18—God responds to Abraham’s prayer.
Personal Application:
1. Besetting sin always hurts other people; ourselves and God (see Genesis 20:6).
2. Besetting sin needs to be confronted with a healthy fear of God.
3. Besetting sin needs to be confronted with God’s Word.
4. Our sin doesn’t change who God is, see Genesis 20:7.

Acts 2:42-47
Sermon given by: Pastor Carl Broggi.
Intro: The church can be a Godly place to worship when it’s done His way. Not perfect because it’s made up of people—but a healthy church. These are non-negotiable:
I. There was a continued determination, see Acts 2:42. Continuance is proof of conversion—much more than church attendance, see 1 John 2:19.
II. There was Bible education. Things you like to hear and things you don’t like to hear—teaching and preaching the Word of God. Is my/your belief based on the Word of God, see 2 Timothy 4:3.
III. There will be a loving association. Unity is also in what we share—outwardly. Fellowship is not an option if a church is to grow, see Acts 16:5.
IV. There was sincere adoration—praising and worshipping the Lord; the breaking of bread and prayer. Being lukewarm is knowing but not being excited by the Truth, see Revelation 3:15.
V. There was unselfish consideration, see Acts 2:43-45. If your gift means little to you it means little to God, see 2 Samuel 24:22-25.
VI. There was ongoing multiplication, see Acts 2:46-47. They were filled with the Holy Spirit—if you have been saved then you have something to share, see Acts 6:7.
Personal Application:
1. The truth sometimes is offensive, but if not—we would not be made aware of our sin.
2. Fellowship is crucial, see Hebrews 3:13.
3. Healthy sheep will reproduce; are you willing to share your Faith—your Gift?

Acts 2:2-41

Intro: A model of what God intends the church to be—a healthy church. A fresh reminder of what our church should be.
I. A healthy church has Spiritual power.
A. His spiritual power came with audible evidence, see Acts 2:2.
B. His spiritual power came with visible evidence, see Acts 2:3.
C. His spiritual power came with linguistic evidence, see Acts 2:4.
II. A healthy church has Spiritual preaching.
A. Spiritual preaching is Bible based; see Acts 2:16, Acts 2:25 and Acts 2:34.
B. Spiritual preaching is Christ centered; see Acts 2:22, Isaiah 9:2, Isaiah 9:6 and Isaiah 35:5-6.
III. A healthy church has Spiritual power.
A. Spiritual people will feel conviction by the Lord, see Acts 2:37.
B. Spiritual people will experience conversion to the Lord, see Acts 2:37-38, Matthew 3:8 and Acts 26:20.
C. Spiritual people will make a confession of the Lord; see Acts 2:38 and Luke 11:32.
Personal Application:
1. Your sin will either be received through Christ or paid for in Hell, see 1 Peter 3:18.
2. Hear—Believe—Be Sealed—Ephesians 1:13.
3. Are you Spiritual or someone who just goes to church?

The Book of Nehemiah. Sermon given by: Pastor Carl Broggi.
Intro: God’s faithfulness to us as a nation; what is it God has called us to be?
I. Building the walls.
A. Nehemiah’s prayer to rebuild, see Nehemiah 1:4-11.
B. Nehemiah’s answer to rebuild, see Nehemiah 2:1-10.
C. Nehemiah’s plan to rebuild, see Nehemiah 2:17 and Nehemiah 3:1-5. There was a job for everyone to do, but some did not.
D. Nehemiah’s opposition to rebuild, see Nehemiah 4:1-17.
1. Discouragement, see Nehemiah 4:1.
2. Danger, see Nehemiah 4:7-11.
3. Death, see Ephesians 6:12.
4. Sow discord, see Nehemiah 5:1.

II. Building of the people.

Psalm 80
America was born in 1776 but today it needs to be born again.
Pastor Broggi looks at our founding fathers faith and compares the Israel of King Asaph’s day to America today.
First we look at God’s sovereign planting of both Israel and America. Throughout God’s Word (Isaiah, Jeremiah and Amos) we see God’s people described as the vine. Jesus talked about His followers being the vine and He the branch. This concept is addressed in Ps. 80:8. Like Israel, America was divinely planted by God.
Today, secular history books fail to mention the Pilgrim’s gratefulness to God; instead their gratefulness is attributed to the Indians.
Secondly, God sovereignly provided both for Israel and America.
What God did for Israel, He did for us (Ps. 33:12 & Ps. 80:10). This country has been blessed more than any other. God will bless any nation that blesses God. (Ps. 35:27, Ps. 144:15 & Prov. 14:34.)
Unlike Bette Midler’s song, God is NOT involved from a distance. Rom. 13:1 All authority comes from God. Ps. 75:2-6 Though Benjamin Franklin was considered by many a deist, he did have the benefit of being under the teaching/preaching of George Whitfield. And at the Constitutional convention of 1787 he said: “I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth- that God Governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?”
Third, just as God can bless the nation that blesses God, God’s sovereign punishment can fall on the nation that forgets Him. In Ps. 80:12 Asaph talks about the hedge. Today God is cutting holes in our hedge of protection…both internally through the welfare state we have become and externally through the militant action of terrorists. George Mason said: “By an inevitable chain of causes and effects, Providence punishes national sins by national calamities.” As Israel opened the door to idolatry and was abandoned by God…the same is happening in America today.
Our economy is in a shambles; we are spending money we don’t have; we have countless millions who want the support of the system, who don’t want to work. God made us to work…even before the fall, Adam worked in the garden. We will work in heaven.
Finally, we look at God’s sovereign pleasure of the nations. Ps. 80:7 & 80:14.
Application:
1. We are to pray up. 1 Ti 2:1-4 1 First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 2 Ch 7:14-15 14 and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15 “Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place.
2. We are to speak up. We are to preach the gospel. There is a direct correlation between the disintegration of the people and the disintegration of the nation.
3. We need to confess up. We need repentance. 1 Pe 4:17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
Prayer without repentance angers God. Ps. 80:4.
