Theme of Philippians: The person of Christ and our relationship with Him. Theme of Philippians 4: Rejoicing in Christ. Intro: Paul is under house arrest and chained to a Roman guard and yet he is still rejoicing! Paul affirms his sense of belonging in the body, Philippians 4:1. Paul deeply loves these people. I. We are to be known for our harmony, Philippians 4:2-3. These women were at odds with each other and Paul was very direct, naming names. Paul is using a Biblical principle, Matthew 18:15-17. Live in harmony (how?) in the Lord. See Philippians 1:27, Philippians 2:2 and Philippians 2:14-15. II. We are to be known for our rejoicing, Philippians 4:4. We are instructed/commanded to rejoice in the Lord. We can rejoice that our name is in The Book of Life and we can serve, etc. III. We are to be known for our forbearance, Philippians 4:5. Willingness to yield one’s personal rights. See 1 Timothy 3:2-3 and Titus 3:2.

Personal Application · Are you right with your brother/sister? · Are you rejoicing in the Lord? You need to, because when we rejoice in the Lord our perspective changes. Joy is not related to our circumstances. · Do you have a yielding spirit? For the Lord is near! Key Verse: Philippians 1:21

Theme: Knowing Christ - Knowing God personally. We were saved into a relationship with the Living God! Intro: He saved us from the just wrath we deserve to the saving grace of a just God. I. A goal to reach for, Philippians 3:12-13. Paul forgot the past and looked forward to the future with God’s truth. II. An example to follow, Philippians 3:16. Keep focused. III. A destruction to weep over, Philippians 3:18-19. Paul is contrasting believers and non-believers walk/manner of Christian life, see Ephesians 4:1, Ephesians 4:17, Ephesians 5:15 and 1 John 1:7. Here is the example/rationale, Acts 20:29-32, Paul often warned about non-Christians. Paul is sensitive to their eternal damnation because they are not saved, see 1 Corinthians 1:17-18. Saved by faith alone, Christ alone, see Galatians 2:21. Warnings: see Matthew 7:15, Matthew 25:46, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 and Mark 9:48. Hell is a Dramatic place, which is why it took a Dramatic act to conquer it-Golgotha! IV. A future to long for, Philippians 3:20-21. Jesus, The King someday is coming back. We need to eagerly wait, see John 14:2-3. Right after you die your spirit goes, see 1 Corinthians 15:51.

Personal Application: 1. God uses real flesh and blood models to help us put into practice the Christian life. 2. We are called to live as aliens because our citizenship is in Heaven, see 1 Peter 1:8-9 and 1 Peter 2:11. 3. If we don’t come to know Christ it will be eternally disastrous!!!!!
